Everyone knows the song “Gloria” by Laura Branigan, right?

But did you know it was originally an Italian song?

Written and performed by Umberto Tozzi and Giancarlo Bigazzi, the song didn’t climb the US charts until Laura Branigan’s english-language cover in 1982 — three years after its original release. Selling two million copies, Branigan’s cover went all the way to number two in the charts, never quite taking that top spot.

Calling Laura Branigan’s version of “Gloria” a cover might be a bit of a stretch. Branigan rewrote the lyrics to take on a new meaning.

While the original song was a simple love story, Branigans’ version of “Gloria” — co-written with Trevor Veitch — focused on a young girl moving too fast through life.

Love stories are overrated anyway!
