Fiona, a baby hippo born at Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, had a turbulent start to life. She was born six weeks early.
Early on, this meant critical care. The baby calf couldn’t stand or nurse from her mother when she was born on January 24. The calf weighed about 29 pounds when she was born, about 25 pounds lighter than the lowest recorded birth weight for a hippo — they normally weigh between 55 and 120 pounds. While the mother, Bibo, was healthy after the birth, Fiona needed round-the-clock care for over a week to keep her alive.
Todays update is absolutely precious, as Fiona finds her way to the staff showers and falls asleep under the running water.
It’s okay to watch it over and over.
The videos where she wiggles her ears are the best!
