In 1968, singers Danny Hutton, Cory Wells and Chuck Negron formed their group in Los Angeles. They took the name Three Dog Night. It refers to sleeping with 3 dogs to warm you during the coldest night in the Australian outback.
Their debut on Billboard’s Top 100 came in early 1969 with Try A Little Tenderness. The song had been a hit for Otis Redding (1966) and Ted Lewis (1933).
Nilsson wrote their first Top 10 hit – One. Next was Easy To Be Hard from the rock musical Hair.
By 1975, Three Dog Night had charted 21 hits, including 3 number one songs. According to Dunhill/ABC records they also sold 40 million albums during this time.
Songwriters responsible for some of their biggest hits include Randy Newman, Leo Sayer, Paul Williams and Hoyt Axton.
Here’s one of my favorite Three Dog Night songs. Eli’s Coming was written by Laura Nyro. It debuted October 25th, 1969 and reached #10 on the charts.
