Kelly Ripa Reveals the Simple Reason Why She Gave Up Drinking Alcohol

February 20, 2020

Kelly Ripa went from sober January to sober year-round.

The “Live! With Kelly and Ryan” anchor is explaining what inspired her to give up alcohol.

Ripa initially joked that she stopped drinking when Ryan Seacrest became her co-host before explaining that the real reason was very simple and straightforward: she felt better.

“I did a sober month — all my girlfriends did it, we all did it together — and I just never went back to it,” she the 49-year-old told PEOPLE. “Ryan likes to blame himself for me stopping drinking, he’s like, ‘I got here and you stopped drinking.’ It really was not that.”

She explained that she didn’t even feel the need to grab a drink following the alcohol detox.

“It wasn’t even really a thought process. It felt great, I felt like I looked great, I felt like I didn’t feel hungover,” she explained. “Not that I was a heavy drinker — I wasn’t someone who got drunk — but even like two glasses of wine at a girl’s night out dinner, I would feel it the next morning.”

The mom-of-three even said that quitting drinking was much easier than quitting smoking.

“Quitting smoking I really had to think about,” she admitted. “I was like: ‘Smoking leads to cancer and it will kill you.’ It was a thing I had to tell myself. And I was like, ‘It gives you wrinkles.’ And that was the thing that was really terrifying.”

“But you don’t want to die early, needlessly, over cigarettes,” she continued. “Over something you don’t even like that much anyway. But drinking was very easy I didn’t really think about it at all.”

Wine prices are lower than they’ve ever been right now, but Ripa brought up another statistic that she thinks she contributed to -- a decline in wine purchases.

"They're saying that Americans bought less wine last year. It's the first drop in a quarter of a century," Ripa joked. "Now, I believe this is because I quit drinking, that I caused this dip. I have influenced the market. I'm not saying I've driven people [out of drinking], I'm saying I stopped buying wine and there's a... dip."

Fans on social media have been getting some really great content from Ripa including her “hand-holding incompatibility” with husband, Mark Conseulos, and shade from her teenage daughter, Lola, who called her parents’ PDA “absolutely repulsive.”
