Cinema Owners Want Illinois Governor To Modify Reopening

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Movie theaters in Illinois are not expected to open until Phase 4 of the governor’s reopening plan, but cinema owners would like to see a couple of things changed in that plan.

Gov. JB Pritzker’s plan for movie theaters calls for no more than 50 people inside, once they are allowed to reopen.

Chris Johnson, the president of the National Association of Theatre Owners of Illinois, says depending on the venue, setting the cap at 50 wouldn’t make it worthwhile for many to open.

Johnson would like the state to allow operation at 50% capacity, provided social distancing can be maintained.

Under the Pritzker plan, theaters would expect to open June 26.

Johnson would like to see that reopening a couple of weeks sooner.`
