The latest cluster of coronavirus-related deaths takes the state total to 5,525 over the course of the pandemic.

State officials have said statistics about the virus should be examined over several days to identify trends. In that respect, the number of deaths have been relatively low most days recently.

The number of people who died from COVID-19 was 23 on Monday; 60 on Sunday May 31; 61 on May 30; 86 on May 29; 104 on May 28; 160 on May 27; 39 on May 26.

The highest daily death toll was reported in mid-May, when 192 people had died from coronavirus complications.

Meantime, on Tuesday the Illinois Department of Public Health reported 1,614 new, confirmed cases of coronavirus, taking the state’s total to 122,848.

Authorities have said in general Illinois has bent the curve of new infections, though residents must continue to observe precautions as the state enters its latest phase of reopening. These include keeping social distance from others in public and wearing masks or face coverings in crowded environments.
